A Christmas Carol Now one of our favourite christmas carols, the poem 'Once In Royal David's City' was written by Cecil Alexander, an Anglican bishop's wife and published in her hymnbook "Hymns for Little Children" in 1848. One year later H J Gauntlett discovered the poem and set it to the music with which we are so familiar today. IIt has become traditional over the years for the first verse to be performed as a solo. In the recording here the solo part is sung by twelve year old Oscar Clayton, who has sung for various choirs including that of the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace. |
